PRESCOT
Prescot Market Place Community Project
Our vision for Prescot Market Place, Prescot, is to create a valued community space for the residents of the town. Our proposal aims to develop a bustling hub of activity; whether it be a local market, a musical performance or concert, a local theatrical production, an extension to the Shakespeare North or just simply a pleasant place to sit and have lunch.
A Place for Everyone
The canopy roof combines with a new building to accommodate unisex toilets, a small kiosk (for drinks and ice creams), large internal storage area (for chairs, market stalls, equipment etc) and a small multi-functional hall. We envisage the hall to be used by a myriad of community groups for various activities and can be completely opened-up to the exterior space, linking the two together for greater flexibility.
A Striking Addition
Our main design driver is to unify the irregular shape of the site into a coherent whole whilst providing flexible and functional spaces. All of this must be achieved with a design that creates a striking addition to the town of Prescot; something beautiful to look at and inhabit.
A Folded 'Fan'
Our concept is derived from the existing site lines and specifically the retaining walls to the north-east of the site. We sought out a form on plan that would help unify the irregular shaped site, which in turn led to the folded ‘fan’ structure that provides a uniform canopy across the area. This element/component offers covered external multi-functional space that will be used for various activities and events.
