Solving Period Property Problems

The existing house suffered from a common problem found with period properties of a poor rear outlook. The kitchen was located at the rear of the property and was slightly small and confined.  Upstairs there was a generous master bedroom, which was well-proportioned but the landing space was convoluted and second bedroom narrow. The neighbouring house to the north presented a blank gable end to the site and created an unusual wedge shaped courtyard space.

An Open Corner to the Garden

Our design solution sought to add an extension to the rear that stepped in line with the boundary while being orthogonal to the existing dwelling.  This helped us maximise the space internally while being sympathetic to the context.  The extension has an open corner with bi-fold doors that help create a connection to the garden both visually and physically.
