Fryth Mead Home Extension Project Featured in Dwell+

Our Fryth Mead home extension project has been featured in Dwell+ online magazine, showcasing a thoughtful transformation that reimagines a modest 1970s St Albans brick house into a character-filled contemporary family home.

In the feature, titled “Before & After: Near London, a Basic Brick House Breaks Free From the ’70s,” Dwell+ explores how the project successfully moves beyond the limitations of its original design. Once defined by its rigid layout and unremarkable exterior, the house has been reshaped into a light-filled, expressive home that balances modern living with a strong sense of identity.

“The owners were very keen on bringing more character to what was essentially a bland box,” says Simon Knight, who led the design of the extension. Rather than overpowering the original structure, the project focuses on carefully considered interventions that introduce warmth, texture, and visual interest, while dramatically improving the home’s functionality.

The Dwell+ feature highlights the project’s striking before-and-after contrast, documenting how the extension opens up the house to its surroundings and redefines the relationship between old and new.
